Prickly Pear Cactus

I recently purchased a prickly pear cactus in a 2 gallon pot from a greenhouse in CO. It had only 4 pads and 2 (quartersized pads) coming. Since returning to South Dakota 3 weeks ago the quarter sized pads are now 6 inches across! I can now see that this plant is going to be taking over.

Even though the plant is enjoying the South Dakota Summer what about wintering it? I am assuming that planting it outside in SD is out of the question so how do I manage it indoors? Do I break off pads when size is an issue? If so how do I do so without damaging the plant? Can I restart the pads as cuttings? Because of the way this ppc is growing it is also unstable in the pot. Should I be concerned or are they tough enough to handle the weight of poorly distributed pads?

Thanks for any help you can give.
