Cactus Identification

Hello Dick,

Sorry for my delay. I am pretty certain you have an Echinopsis which was once named Trichocereus. These cacti were hybridized quite often over the years and hybrids are everywhere. Proper identification may be difficult. I have a good reference page for seeing just a small number of these plants. Please check out this link below and you may see something similar to your plant.

Your plant is very similar to Echinopsis huascha but as I said the identification is difficult given all the hybrid populations on the market now. The name change from Trichocereus to Echinopsis (see Anderson's "The Cactus Family") makes the search more difficult but at least now you know a little of the story. This plant is still referred to as a Trichocereus and the name change may take some time to be recognized.

I hope this helps a little,
Vonn
